First Look vs. Aisle Reveal: Which Is Right for You? | Kansas City Wedding Photographer
One of the most common questions I get from couples during the planning process is whether they should do a first look before the ceremony or wait to see each other for the first time while walking down the aisle.
The truth is, there isn't a right or wrong answer. Both options can be incredibly meaningful. The best choice is simply the one that feels most like you.
What Is a First Look?
A first look is a private moment before the ceremony where you and your partner see each other for the first time. Typically, it's just the two of you (plus your photographer quietly documenting from a distance).
Many couples choose a first look because it gives them a chance to slow down and spend a few intentional moments together before the excitement of the day fully begins.
Benefits of a First Look
More time together on your wedding day
A private moment away from guests
Less pressure and nerves before the ceremony
More flexibility in the photography timeline
The opportunity to complete many portraits before the ceremony
One of the biggest advantages is that it often allows couples to attend at least part of cocktail hour instead of spending that time taking photos.
What Is an Aisle Reveal?
An aisle reveal is the more traditional approach. You don't see each other before the ceremony, and the first time you see one another is as one partner walks down the aisle.
For many couples, this moment has been part of their vision from the very beginning.
Benefits of an Aisle Reveal
The anticipation leading up to the ceremony
A traditional wedding day experience
Sharing the moment in front of family and friends
A powerful emotional reaction when the ceremony begins
There is something undeniably special about seeing your partner for the first time surrounded by the people who matter most.
What About the Timeline?
This is often where the decision becomes practical.
If you're planning an aisle reveal, we'll typically schedule:
Individual getting ready photos
Individual portraits
Wedding party photos (if possible)
Family photos after the ceremony
Couple portraits after the ceremony
If you're planning a first look, we can often complete:
Couple portraits
Wedding party photos
Some family photos
before the ceremony begins.
Neither option is better, but a first look usually creates a little more flexibility in the timeline.
My Honest Advice
Choose the option that feels most natural to your relationship.
If the idea of sharing a quiet moment together before the ceremony sounds comforting and exciting, a first look may be perfect for you.
If you've always dreamed about seeing each other for the first time at the end of the aisle, don't feel pressured to do a first look simply because it's popular.
As your photographer, my job is to help create a timeline that supports your priorities, regardless of which option you choose.
The most meaningful photographs come from moments that feel genuine to you—not from following someone else's wedding day checklist.
Still Not Sure?
During our planning process, we'll walk through your timeline together and talk about what matters most to you. By the end of that conversation, most couples have a pretty clear sense of which option feels right.
And the good news? Whether you choose a first look or an aisle reveal, you'll still end up married to your favorite person at the end of the day.
